#personal – Christmas in the USA

I can’t believe our holiday to the United States is already over and that we’ve been back in The Netherlands for almost a week now! My boyfriend Chris and I went to the USA for Christmas to visit his family (he is American) and made a stop in NYC. In this diary post I’m sharing my adventures in the big apple and in Wisconsin, the dairy state. Take a look at my life in pictures.

Times Square New York City

Times Square! When we walked from the train station to our apartment and saw all the billboards and neon lights on Times Square I was just blown away. Even the days after, the whole scene of Times Square kept amazing me. I’ve been to Tokyo and Seoul, two cities that are much bigger than NYC, but neither of them had this many flashing billboards!

Skyline New York City
Overal I was just really impressed by New York. Central Park for example is massive. We saw it from the sky when we flew to Wisconsin and both Chris and I were shocked by the size of this park.

There are several rock formations in Central Park that make for perfect relaxing and picture taking spots!

Ice skating Central Park New York City
In winter a huge ice rink is put up in Central Park. Christmas song after Christmas song was bursting out of the speakers making the scene even more special.

Wicked Broadway
Our trip to New York was a Christmas gift from Chris’ dad and his wife Sandy. That by itself would have already been an incredible gift, but they also took us to see the musical Wicked in the Gershwin theater on Broadway! Chris’ dad sees his only child just once or twice a year and therefore likes to spoil him (and his girlfriend, me!) a bit during the times they do get see each other.

Wicked by the way was absolutely amazing. I had always wanted to see this show, but never expected to fall in love with it as much as I did. I’ve had the song ‘Defying Gravity’ on repeat for weeks now!

We saw Christine Dwyer in the role of Elphaba, who was absolutely amazing. But while searching for the song on Youtube I came across the above version by Willemijn Verkaik (who played Elphaba on Broadway, in London, Germany and The Netherlands) and fell in love with it. I might be a bit biased because Willemijn is Dutch, but I honestly think that she is the best Elphaba ever vocal wise.

Statue of Liberty
When in New York one must see the Statue of Liberty. I managed to capture this picture with my phone (!!) which usually doesn’t take such amazing pictures. Seeing Lady Liberty and the skyline of New York from the ferry was breathtaking. We went up to the pedestal which I think is good enough. I’m not sure if going to the crown would have really added anything to the experience. If you did go up to the crown let me know!

Real Kristoff and Sven
IS THAT KRISTOFF AND SVEN IN REAL LIFE?! I made my own Chris pose with a huge Sven plushie, because I think he kind of looks like Kristoff from Frozen don’t you think? I mean they share almost the same name and same hair color haha!

Christmas presents
Back in Wisconsin at Chris’ mom we also got hugely spoiled. Look at the amount of presents under the tree! Keep an eye out for my upcoming haul video (this Tuesday on Youtube, Wednesday on the blog) if you want to know what I all got.

opening presents
Someone is happy with her presents!

In Wisconsin we went to an open podium evening and this talented guy performed! His name is Jon Holzbauer. He is  a friend of my boyfriend and an aspiring musician that makes use of loops! Personally I like his cover of ‘All About that Bass’ much better than the original! The amount of subscribers he has definitely doesn’t do justice to his talent. So if you like his singing (or just think that he’s cute), please subscribe to his channel.

Panera Bread
When we are in the USA I have to eat at Panera Bread. It’s my absolute favorite food chain. They sell sandwiches, soups, salads and pastries. My personal favorites are the bread bowl with creamy tomato soup and the fuji apple chicken salad.

pastries Panera Bread
Look at all these yummy pastries! Panera often has a ‘0.99 cents for a pastry with any order’ deal going on, making it hard not to buy one… I really like their carrot cake muffins.

In Love
Chris’ friend Andrew Smith, who is a very talented photographer, took this stunning photo of the two of us. After it was posted on Facebook some people thought that it was a ‘save the date we are getting married’ photo haha! Nope, not yet. Next time we are in the USA I want to do a little shoot with Andrew. Chris is usually the one behind the camera so it’s nice to have some pictures of the two of us.

Crafty Cow Oconomowoc
MOO ~! Wisconsin is known as the dairy state. They take pride in being called ‘Cheese Heads’. Funny enough Cheese Head is a term often used for Dutch people (not always in the most positive way) as well!

brother sister
After we left Chris’ little sister Ashley posted this picture with the following cute caption: “I’ve could’ve chosen so many photos to post but I chose this one cause it represents how dysfunctional we are. As another Christmas rolls by, so does the departure of my brother & Dutchie. Until I see you in Europe again this summer, toedeledoki.”

It was great to see friends and family again in the USA. This spring/summer some of Chris’ family members might visit us here in The Netherlands which is awesome. I can’t wait to see everyone again! We hope to go back to Wisconsin in summer!
